He's Always Talking about Grammar

Today is Wednesday, October 9th, 2007, and this is your ESL Help Desk welcoming you to today's ESL lesson.

After you finish with today's lesson, hop on over to our Library, which is being populated weekly with audio stories and grammar lessons.

Is your English teacher always talking about grammar?  Do you understand what he or she is saying?  Do you think it matters?  Do you tune out when he or she does?  Do you think you can learn English without knowing grammar? We'd like to know what your experience has been. Please submit your response.

Here's a little exercise for those of you who either like grammar or want to learn more about English grammar.

We're going to show you a sentence.  First, find the main subject of the sentence, and then find the main verb.

Then find all the nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions.

Feedback, Please!

Consider the following ideas:

  • What would you like me to write about in future lessons?

  • What questions  would like me to answer?

  • Do you have any comments about the story you just listened to?

  • ***If you would like us to respond directly to you, please include your email address in your message.***

Your Feedback Is Our Feed!

I really like my class, but Mr. Thomas is always talking about grammar because we don't understand English well enough.

When you are ready, check your answers against the chart below:

Nouns Verbs Adjectives Adverbs Prepositions Conjunctions
I like   really   but
Mr. Thomas is talking   always about
grammar         because
we do (not) understand   well
English     enough

The main subject of the sentence is "I" and the main verb is "like". The sentence also has a secondary subject, "Mr. Thomas" and a secondary verb, "is talking".   The sentence also has a dependent clause, and the subject of the dependent clause is "we" and the verb of the dependent clause is "don't understand".

Now, please go to our Library, and listen to some nice, entertaining, and educational stories written by other learners of English.

We will see you next week, when we'll have some fun listening activities for you.

Thanks for stopping by the first stop for learners of English.
