Cross-country Skiing
An Audio Story

This is the ESL Help Desk welcoming you to today's English as a Second Language podcast.  It is springtime in New England, and while most of us are looking forward to the advent of spring weather and new warmth, some skiers are still thinking about their experiences skiing this past winter, and are looking forward to one more day skiing in the winter wonderland.

Skiing is a popular sport worldwide.  Whether you are in Japan, the Pacific Northwest of the United States, or Argentina, people love skiing.  In today's podcast, we are going to listen to a dialogue written by Stella Rasporskaya and Gennadiy Gelzayd about one form of skiing, cross-country skiing, commonly written as "xc-skiing".  Stella and Gennadiy wrote this dialogue in their ESL writing class.

I love cross-country skiing.

Before you listen to the audio, think about your answers to the following questions:

  1. What is your favorite way of relaxing?  If you live somewhere that has seasons, winter, spring, summer and fall, do you have a favorite way of relaxing for each season and type of weather?

  2. When you do an outdoor activity, do you prefer to be alone or to be involved in an outdoor activity with somebody else?  Why?

  3. Look at the pictures of the cross-country skiers above and below. What do you think they are carrying in their pockets and backpacks?  Write your answer below and submit it.

  4. When you are in a bad mood, what activities put you in a good mood?
