My Family Tree:
My Dad's Branch:

The Tanur Branch

Family Tree Prepared by Jane Hanser.  Last updated March 27, 2008Please email corrections and additions to Jane. (If you do not already know my email address, please go to JewishGen's Family Finder, Search for the surname "Tanur" and you'll find my listing.  If I put my email address here, I'll get truckloads of spam.)

The story I recently heard being handed down was that there were three Tanur brothers in Lithuania, one of whom, Michael (Miguel), went to Mexico, one of whom, Hillel, went to South Africa, and one of whom, Yehoshua (Hyman), went to the United States.  We now see a slightly different family tree.  Tanchum had sons: Yehoshua (Hyman) and Hillel, possibly Ber (Bernard),  possibly Tsadok, and possibly Tsvi HirschYehoshua immigrated to the USA (Pittsburgh), Hillel and Dov Ber (Bernard) immigrated to South Africa.  Tsadok and Tsvi Hirsch remained in Lithuania.

Michael, Tsadok's son, immigrated to Mexico.  Abram, Tsvi Hirsch's son, immigrated to SA in 1928. Ida Tanur, my grandmother, and Sarah Tanur, daughters of Tsvi Hirsch, immigrated to Pennsylvania. They all lived in Raseiniai district. (See Skuodas and Raseiniai, below.) Read below for this fascinating story of our family, and share your knowledge (and photos!) with us as we piece this puzzle together, and make new connections in the process.

TSVI HIRSH (Harry) Tanur

I believe that Tsvi Hirsch's father was Tanchum and his mother was Yehudis nee Berman. We have records (from JewishGen) that Hirsch, son of Tanchum and Yehudis, died in 1936 in Raseiniai

Tsvi Hirsh
Tanur remained in Lithuania.   In Lithuania, Tsvi Hirsh married Anna Tillie Myers.  (In 1992, when Ida was married, Tsvi Hirsh was still alive in 1922 but his wife was deceased.).  My grandmother Ida (Chana Henyia) and great-aunt Sarah were their daughters.  We do not know the names of other siblings with any certainty.  (From Howard, we have a photo of Tsvi Hirsch, his wife, 2 daughters and 2 sons, one of whom was Shalom (Schave), and possibly this is the same Tsvi Hirsch, but we are not sure of this.)

Tsvi Hirsch and Anna Tillie (nee Myers)'s known daughters were:
IDA
(Chaya Henia) (b. 1891? - April 24, 1930) and
SARAH
.  (1897 - 19??, RIP)

After my grandmother Ida (Tanur) arrived in the U.S. in 1910, she went to live with her uncle Hyman Tanur, in Expedit, PA.  1) Ida married Joseph Boris in 1922 in Philadelphia, PA.

1) Ida (nee Tanur) and Joseph Boris had three children: Theona (Chana Tuba or Chana Tova), Jerome (Yaakov Moshe), and Betty.  2) Sarah married Abe King. They had one daughter, Toby.

The next generations:  1) Theona married to George Salkowitz, and their son is Joseph (Joe).  2) Jerome married Florence nee Buntman, and their children are Lynne, Jane (that's me) and Anthony (Tony).  3) Betty married and divorced; she has one daughter, Karen Winter-Lein.  2)  Toby married Jack Seidman.  Their daughter is Gail.

1) Lynne's son is Neil (Boris).  2) In 2000, Jane married Phil Hanser and they live in Newton, MA.

ABRAM Tanur

Avram (1912 - July 2, 1960) emigrated from Skuodas to South Africa in 1928.  Abram's Hebrew name is Abraham bar Hirsh Tsvi.   Abram had a brother, Shalom (Schave), who emigrated to Buenos Aires, one other brother (name unknown) and at least two other sisters.  (My grandmother Ida and her sister Sarah were possibly the firstborn of his children and the first to emigrate; we don't know if they are siblings or cousins.)

Avram married Doris
(nee Norton(Nossick) 1921-1982), their children are Sharon and Howard (b. 1959)  Both Sharon and Howard live in London, England.

Howard is married to Julie.

SHALOM (Schave) Tanur

Shalom went to Buenos Aires, Argentina.  He married (?).  Their children were Lina, Yehuda Lev (Leopoldo/Leon) (1902 - 1939), and Yaakov (Jacobo) (1902 - 1960).  Yaakov married (?). Their son was Enrique ( - 1972).  Enrique married and divorced Nelida Gubkin; Norberto is their son.

Hyman Tanur married Rachel (Rachel Rivka bat R. Akiva).  Hyman and Rachel's children are:

History of Lithuania:

During the occupation of Lithuania by the Russian Empire (1795 - 1914), Lithuania was divided into three main governorates, one of which was Kaunas (Kovno).  Rasainenai is located west of the city of Kovno.

(Wikipedia) "Before Lithuania's independence, the city was generally known in English as Kovno, the traditional Slavic form of its name; the Polish name is Kowno. The traditional Russian name is Ковно although Каунас has been used since 1940. The Yiddish name is Kovne (
קאָװנע) while its names in German include Kowno and Kauen."

What's in a Name?

Eliahu  The Vilna Gaon's name was Eliahu ben Zalman, and he lived from 1720 to 1797.  Perhaps the preponderance of the name "Eliahu" in Lithuania is as a kovod to the Vilna Gaon.

Hirsh, Tsvi, and Tzvi Hirsh

The Hebrew name Tzvi, or deer, has its Yiddish equivalent as Hirsh. Thus, Tsvi Hirsh are often paired together.

How can we use this name to trace genealogy?

I found this name  numerous times in the Lithuanian database. It could have been passed along from family to family. But another possibility is that it reflected kovod to a Rav. For example, R. Tzvi Hirsh Zak (whose wife's name was Sarah) led the Jewish community of Skuodas from 1779 until his death, in 1788.  R. Tsvi Hirsch ben R. Avraham Avli served in Shidlova in the early 19th C., until 1858.

Michael

R. Michael was the leader of Jewish community of Skuodas in the early 1700's, when Jews suffered from heavy taxation, and was imprisoned because the community could not pay its debt.

Ovsey This was a popular given name in Lithuania, linked to the Hebrew name Yehoshua.
