Punctuation and Dependent Clauses: although

Is this a sentence?

Although some people think this is being dishonest.

In each example below, the main or independent clause has been underlined and the dependent (or subordinate) clause has been attached to the main clause.

...although...

Dependent Clauses That Begin with 'although'

The common subordinate conjunction although introduces a dependent (or subordinate) clause. 

Sentence fragments that begin with the subordinate conjunctions although are unacceptable in writing and infrequent in conversation.   

WORD ORDER AND PUNCTUATION

You may begin the sentence with the main clause or with the subordinate clause.

When the sentence begins with the main clause, do not use a comma to separate it from the subordinate clause.  The main clause is in bold in the sentence below.

  • Some people think this is a little thing although I think it is being dishonest.

  • Nobody claims to know why the Holocaust happened although we all claim to know.

  • Although we all claim to know why the Holocaust happened, nobody really knows.

  • Much graffiti was written on walls, saying that our leader was a great man, although my village didn't even have electricity.

  • Although my village didn't even have electricity, much graffiti was written on walls, saying that our leader was a great man.
