He's Always Talking about Grammar

Today is Wednesday, October 9th, 2007, and this is your ESL Help Desk welcoming you to today's ESL lesson.

Is Your English Teacher Always Talking about Grammar

Do you understand what he or she is saying?
How much do you think grammar matters
Do you tune out when he or she talks about grammar?
Do you think you can learn English without knowing
grammar ?

We'd like to know what your experience has been. Please submit your response to OUR BLOG.

Here's a little exercise for those of you who either like grammar or want to learn more about English grammar.

We're going to show you a sentence.  First, find the main subject of the sentence, and then find the main verb.

Then find all the nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions.

* -->  *  --> *

I really like my class, but Mr. Thomas is always talking about grammar because we don't understand English well enough.

When you are ready, check your answers against the chart below:

The main subject of the sentence is "I" and the main verb is "like". The sentence also has a secondary subject, "Mr. Thomas" and a secondary verb, "is talking".   The sentence also has a dependent clause, and the subject of the dependent clause is "we" and the verb of the dependent clause is "don't understand".

Now, please go back into our
Library shelves and listen to some nice, entertaining, and educational stories written by other learners of English.

We will see you next week, when we'll have some fun listening activities for you.

Thanks for stopping by the first stop for learners of English.
